After the Emperor Valerian was captured by the armies of Shapur I at the battle of Edessa in 260, Macrianus and his brother Quietus were set up as emperors in opposition to Gallienus, the son of Valerian, by their father, also called Macrianus. While Quietus stayed behind in Emesa with his father's ally, Ballista, the two Macriani marched into the Balkans, where they were defeated and killed.
