Licinius was made Augustus of the West by Galerius in 308, following the death of Severus II. Following the death of Galerius, Licinius also managed to gain control of part if the Eastern Empire by agreement with Maximinus Daia. In alliance with Constantine I, however, Licinius later turned on Daia and defeated him in a civil war, while Constantine defeated Maxentius, another rival emperor. After the civil war concluded in 313, Licinius was married to Constantine's half-sister, Constantia, daughter of the late Tetrarch Constantius I. Licinius issued the Edict of Milan jointly with Constantine. Civil war then erupted again, this time between Licinius and Constantine, which Constantine won in 324. Licinius was imprisoned in Thessaloniki and executed the following year.
