Name:  Michael IV
Brief biography:  Byzantine Emperor 1034-1041.
Nationality:  Byzantine
Occupation:  Emperor
Period of rule:  1034-1041
Date of death:  1041
Place of death:  Eurasia: Istanbul

Michael was from a lower class family who obtained a job at the Byzantine court through his brother, the eunuch John. Michael supposedly attracted the attention of the Empress Zoe due to his looks and began an affair with her leading to Michael being crowned emperor after the death of Zoe's husband Romanos III in 1034. He is often misleadingly described as a money changer or lender prior to becoming emperor, but he could have been a silversmith or in another occupation working with silver. He died of edema in 1041 and was succeeded by his nephew, Michael V, who was adopted by Zoe.
