Eudoxia was a daughter of a magister militum who became empress following her marriage to the emperor Arcadius in 395 probably as part of competing intrigues to influence the young emperor following the death of his father, Theodosius I, earlier that year. She is probably best known for her conflict with the Patriarch of Constantinople and Church Father Saint John Chrysostom. Because of this hostility, many of the surviving sources discussing Eudoxia are hostile to her, so the common depiction of her as a domaneering and unfaithful (to her husband) empress may be exaggerated. As Augusta and mother to five of Arcadius's children, including the future Emperor Theodosius II and Empress Pulcheria, Eudoxia appeared on coins issued under Arcadius. She died in 404, probably still in her 20s, due to complications from either a miscarriage or a stillbirth.
