Dahl was the son of a Bergen fisherman. In 1818, after studying at the Copenhagen Academy, he travelled to Dresden, where apart from visits to Italy and his native Norway he remained for the rest of his life. There he met the leading German Romantic landscapist, Caspar David Friedrich with whom he shared a house from 1823. This picture was painted in the year of Friedrich’s death. Its subject-matter and poetic rendering closely reflect his contemplative and highly atmospheric landscapes.
