In 1796 Napoleon’s army marched victorious into the city of Milan following the fleeing of the Austrian Army. He surveys his troops astride his warhorse, which echoes the alert and courageous air of its rider. Napoleon favoured grey horses, regarded in ancient mythology as symbolising purity and bravery, but which on a more practical level ensured the emperor was easily identifiable to his troops. His favourite was an Arabian called ‘Marengo’ which carried him safely through numerous battles and is most commonly depicted in his equestrian portraits. |
