Men's court dress waistcoat, style of 1750-75. Part of complete court dress suit. Black wool coat with silk embroidery, silk waistcoat with silk embroidery, black wool breeches with emboidered border and diamonte buckle, cotton and silk cravat, leather shoes with cut steel buckles, silk stockings, 2 cotton handkerchieves, ceremonial sword with velvet-covered scabbard, black wool tricorn hat with metal box. Suit was owned by the Nettlefold family and used for dressing up, fancy dress and charades. Label on hat box suggests it originally belonged to Edward Strutt, MP for Derby (1830 onwards) and Chancellor of Duchy of Lancaster (1853-4), 1st Baron Belper. Edward Strutt was related to Elizabeth and Martha Strutt, both wives of Joseph Chamberlain. Martha Strutt was grand-grandmother to John Sutton Nettlefold. Hat supplied by L. & H.
