Description: Obverse: Bust of an emperor facing, wearing paludamentum and cuirass, and a helmet with diadem band and pendilia, holding something in r. hand. Reverse: K with cross above.
Inscriptions: Obverse: D N … Reverse: ANNO (Year). Mint mark: NI. Officina: Δ (4).
Bibliography: No exact match
Notes: This coin displays a sixth century emperor facing and on the reverse has the mint mark NI to the right of the denomination mark, where the regnal year would usually appear. The combination of these features does not appear for Justinian I, Justin II, Tiberius II, Maurice, or Phocas or Herakleios, as possible later adaptations of the earlier bust. Whitting sees the NI as XЧ and lists the coin accordingly as Maurice, but it appears to us to be NI indicating the Nicomedia mint.
