ECM6230-Skeletal content.jpg

Beak and other remains from an Ibis mummy stored in a 'Three Nuns Empire Blend' tobacco tin. The beak is consistent in morphology with a juvenile bird. Originally from the bundle of linen bandages ECM 6230c.

Notes:  The tobacco tin may point to a collection date as the brand 'Three Nuns Empire Blend' was only in production from 1935-45.

The ibis mummy was possibly intended as an offering to the god Thoth. The Egyptian also prepared elaborate effigies for sacred animals; an excellent example is the Ptolemaic cat statuettes dedicated to the goddess Bastet and inscribed with solar imagery (such as ECM 6522).
