Mahogany grandfather clock with carved ornamentation aroud the hood and the body of the clock. Clockface in the middle of the ornamentation.

This grandfather clock was presented to Mason Science College, the precursor to the University of Birmingham, by Sir Josiah Mason, industrialist and founder of the University. It is a late George III period timepiece, made from mahogany with inlaid rosewood. It chimes every quarter of an hour and is on an eight day movement- the original movement is lost. It has an elaborately painted face with figures representing the four continents of Asia, Australasia, Europe and the Americas. Also of note is the beautifully carved ornamentation. The glazed door is flanked by turned Corinthian columns, and above the clock face there is a very delicately moulded broken swan neck pediment.
