Bust of Arthur Thomson. Thomson was born in Guyana in 1890, the son of a colonial civil servant. He studied at Dulwich College and Birmingham University, and enlisted as regimental medical officer during the first world war. When the war ended he returned to Birmingham where he joined the consultant staff of the General Hospital. He was appointed assistant physician of the General Hospital in 1919. He was appointed part time Professor of Therapeutics in 1947 and four years later was elected Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. He was appointed Vice Principal of the University of Birmingham the following year. He was president of the Midland
Medical Society 1956 to 1957, and chairman of the Birmingham Regional Hospital Board, 1962 to 1963. The artist, Franta Belsky, was a Czech-born sculptor. He is well represented in the National Portrait Gallery, and 15 of his sculptures are exhibited in public places around London.
