Individual portrait photograph of Sulaimanu Barau, turned sideways.
Sulaimanu Barau of the Abu Kwaka ruling house succeeded as 6th Emir of Abuja in 1944. Previous to this he had attended Katsina College for a period of five years, following which he spent 4 years implementing his studies by teaching at Keffi and Bida. He left teaching to assist in the administration of the Emirate before succeeding as Emir. During his rule he was instrumental in introducing modern customs whilst attempting to permanently record some of the remaining Abuja traditions.
Teacher, scientist and photographer Edward Harland Duckworth was recommended to the post of Inspector of Education in Nigeria in 1930 following the commendation of his teaching work in Cheltenham. During his time in Nigeria he taught science, developed teaching methods and was elected as editor of Nigeria Magazine, adding his own photographs to articles.
Notes: Inconsistent spellings of his name, Nigeria Magazine and The Chronicle of Abuja spells his name thus (both D0461.01 and D0461.02 are printed in these publications): Sulaimanu Barau.
