"City by Night was painted in 1990 at a time when many of the old buildings around Victoria Square were being pulled down and the grand complex as we know it today had not yet been started. New Street traffic still flowed downhill. From a coffe house on the lower side one looked up a slope, temporarily grassed over, to the Council House and the old red telephone kiosks occupy a place close to the pavement. The time is around 4 o clock just before Christmas as the lights on CHristmas Tree suggest. The painting was made from drawings done on the spot." Katherine Fryer, 1999
