The inhabitants of a rock dwelling execute their daily tasks. This scene at Saumur is one of a number of drawings made in the Loire Valley by the artist en route for Holland from Nantes in 1646. Others are in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, the Stadelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt, the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, and two private collections.

Most of Doomer’s 300 surviving drawings are topographical works such as this of the Netherlands, France and Germany.

Inscriptions / Translations:  Inscribed signed and dated (ink) on verso: 'Omtrent Sameurs aen de rivier de Loore/Doomer f. Ao 1646', and lower in a later hand 'Omtrent Saumeurs aen de Rivier d'Logne'.
