Highly decorated fineware Geometric kantharos of pale buff clay with dark brown paint decoration. The mouth is oval rather than circular, and the handles are not flush with the body. The base is small and flat. On handle A, from the top: birds, lines, circles, lines, birds, meander, squiggles, lines, blobs (at join). On handle B, from the top: indistinct shape, circles, floral motif, lines, crouching man, lines, blobs (at join). On either side is a large ‘X’ beneath the handles on the reserved surface of the vessel. On the neck is a checkerboard pattern, with a three-dimensional effect box meander beneath. The main panel shows a series of boxed lozenges with tiny storks in the corners of the boxes, and a crosshatched border on either side. Concentric circles run beneath the panels, leading to a solid black base. Colour: paint 10YR 2/1 (black); 7.5YR 3/2 (dark brown), fabric 7.5YR 5/6 (strong brown). Complete and in good condition, with minor paint wear to the surface.
Notes: Whole, damaged at rim, fragmentary handles and adjacent area of body; fine ware but very matt. Kantharos with high lip, with chequer pattern. Black painted interior monochrome, thin. Shoulder zone central meander (3 elements) flanked by lozenges in panel with birds in the corners of the panel; 'triglyph' to the sides.
