Theodora was orphaned at an early age and adopted by her great uncle, the Nicaean Emperor John III Doukas Vatatzes (1222-1254). She was later married off to the nobleman Michael Palaiologos, who later became Michael VIII and reclaimed Constantinople from the Latin Empire. Theodora was noted for her restoration of the Constantine Lips monastery in Constantinople. She outlived her husband and was given an imperial burial after her death in 1303 by her son, the Emperor Andronikos II (1282-1328).
