Clodius Albinus was a clamant to the imperial throne in the aftermath of the successive assassinations of Commodus, Pertinax, and Didius Julianus, in opposition to Septimius Severus and Pescennius Niger, during the year known as 'the year of the five emperors'. Though initially allied with Severus and called his Caesar, Severus turned on Albinus after the defeat of Niger and destruction of Byzantium. Albinus's defence was unsuccessful, and he was either murdered or commited suicide in 197. |
